CHARACTER INFO

Name: Geordi La Forge

Canon: Star Trek: The Next Generation

Age: 32 years

Appearance: A picture. For reference, Geordi is about 5'7", or 1.7 meters.

History: Personnel File

Canon Point: After Season four, Episode 25: In Theory

Personality: Being Chief Engineer of the Enterprise is a very demanding job, but Geordi La Forge fills that role like it was made for him. Geordi is extremely innovative as an engineer. He is completely in favor of doing what works, instead of doing what regulations say, which means he'll change things from matter-antimatter ratios used to power the warp drives to schedules for part replacements in order to maximize the Enterprise's efficiency. A number of times when the Enterprise has been in trouble, he proposed radical and untested changes to the ship's systems. Not only did these changes work, but he kept them after the danger had passed, rather than returning them to normal. Because of this, he's known as one of the best engineers in Starfleet.

Geordi is also able to take charge if the situation demands it. Even as a junior Lieutenant serving as conn officer, he was sometimes called on to take command of the bridge. During one incident, he was left in command of the Enterprise while the ship was under attack, and the commanding officers were stuck down on the planet below. Despite being nervous, and having his ability to lead questioned by one of the other officers, Geordi was able to keep the ship safe. Now, as a Lieutenant Commander and chief engineer, Geordi is accustomed to both giving orders and managing people assigned to work under him.

When he's not forced to make hard decisions as an officer, Geordi is open and friendly in both command style and personality. He prides himself at being able to get along with people, and enjoys making friends and working together with others. Geordi expresses dismay when he has trouble connecting with one of his engineers, Reginald Barclay. At Captain Picard's orders, he does his best to encourage Barclay, and when he learns that the man has been dealing with his insecurities by fighting holodeck versions of Geordi and other commanding officers on the Enterprise, he doesn't hold it against him, but instead tries to encourage Barclay to distance himself from his holodeck fantasies. He tends for a casual attitude, even in the way he talks to the ship's computer, thinking out loud while he makes requests, rather than giving a simple order such as "Computer: lights at thirty percent."

Geordi doesn't like everyone universally- for example, when the infamous Ro Laren is brought to the Enterprise for a special mission, Geordi expresses distaste at the thought of having her aboard, but in general, he doesn't like being at odds with people.

Fortunately, cases like Ensign Ro are rare, and Geordi has a number of good friends aboard the ship. For example, he gets along well with Wesley Crusher, despite the boy's young age, calling him "Wes" and taking the boy's suggestions into serious consideration. Geordi also is very close friends with Commander Data- the two of them spend plenty of time together, doing everything from solving Sherlock-Holmes style mysteries on the holodeck to painting, and Geordi always does his best to answer Data's questions about human behavior. Despite lacking the knack for poker that Commander Riker or Data show, he's also a common face at the officers' poker games.

Even despite his friendly attitude, Geordi doesn't have the best luck with romance. He can be nervous about approaching someone he likes, for fear of rejection. When he gets rid of that lack of confidence, he still has a tendency to go over the top with romantic gestures. At one point, he fell in love with a holodeck version of one of the Enterprise's designers, a Dr. Leah Brahms. However, when they met in person, they got off to a very poor start, despite Geordi's best efforts at being friendly. And even worse for him, Geordi learned that she was married. Still, in the end, the two of them did manage to become good friends, after some misunderstandings and arguments.

Born blind, sight has never been something Geordi takes for granted. It took him years to adjust to seeing using his VISOR, after he got his first one when he was five, and although he appreciates the uses of the device, he has always wished that he could see normally. Although he has been offered alternatives for his visor, both in the form of ocular implants and a loaded offer from an omnipotent being, Geordi turned both down, as he believed that the cost was too high.

Abilities/Powers/Skills:
+ Engineering: As Chief Engineer aboard the starship Enterprise, Geordi has an acute understanding of the systems that run Federation ships. That doesn't automatically translate to an understanding of the setups used by different kinds of spaceships, but given the time and resources, he can pick up plenty about the technology used on other kinds of vessels as well. He can also pull off some pretty interesting tricks with that technology, particularly when he understands the science behind the engines.

+ VISOR: Allows Geordi to see not only the visible spectrum, but ultraviolet and infared as well. Geordi has used his visor to see things like streams of neutrinos, the internal composition of things like walls and a crystal structure, stresses in a ship's bulkhead indicating an imminent hull breach, et cetera.

Weaknesses: Without his VISOR, Geordi is entirely blind, and was born this way. In addition, use of his VISOR to see occasionally puts strain on him, resulting in headaches and other problems.

Special Items: VISOR: Geordi's Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement is shaped in the form of a thin band filled with gold filaments that covers his eyes. Neural implants at his temples allow images from the device to reach his brain.

Combadge: a badge with the starfleet symbol. The combadge functions as a combination locator and communication device for Starfleet members during Geordi's time, though it isn't very useful, if there's no one to locate or talk to him.

RP Sample: From the test drive, a few threads.
